New England Coaches Meeting:  12 and Under Championships 2/21/04

 

 

I.  Feedback on Regional Meets

            A.  Facility issues at Northampton.

            B.  Friday night timeline at PVAC.

            C.  Medals and ribbons from Northampton and PVAC sites.

            D.  The meet is too early in the season.

E.  Suggestion to split up the sites by age group, 2 Regional sites for 12 and unders and 2 Regional sites for 13 and overs.

            1.  The 8 and unders felt lost with all of the bigger kids.

            2.  The older kids felt like the little kids were in the way.

F.  More formalities, awards, heat winner for the 8 and unders and maybe 10 and unders.

            1.  Pins for Regional swimmers.

2.  If this is the only meet offered for the 8 and unders, they should be receiving more formalized awards.           

G.  Great feedback on Seekonk and Attleboro Meets.  They were crowded, but well-run.

H.  Regional session suggestion:  12 and under in the morning, 8 and under session in the early afternoon or late morning, 13 and over session in the late afternoon.

II.  Feedback on 12 and Under Meet

A.   For the 11-12 swimmers, the top 8 500 Free and 400 I.M. swimmers should swim at night.  Either in trials/finals format or timed finals last heat at night.

            B.  11-12 Distance High Point Award (bell) for 400 I.M., 1000 Free, 1650 Free.

III.  Feedback on Open Meet

            A.  More 13-14 recognition.

            B.  Should have 2 full heats of 13-14 swimmers.

            C.  Open Meet does not allow for developmental progression of 13-14 swimmers.

            D.  The Open Meet causes kids to miss too much school.

IV.  Other suggestions and ideas

A.  Minutes approved via e-mail so that they can be posted on the web before the next board meeting.

B.  More parent education from New England Swimming, especially regarding competition philosophy for 8 and Under swimmers.

C.  The LSC needs to do a better job of explaining meet changes to coaches.

Technical Committee Recommendations

1.  Facility issues at Northampton.

6.  New England Pins for Regional swimmers (at least the 8 and Under swimmers).

7.  At 12 and Under Championships the top eight 11-12 500 Free and 400 I.M. swimmers should swim at night.  Either in trials/finals format or as timed finals with the fast heat at night.

8.  At the 12 and Under Championships, we should offer an 11-12 Distance High Point Award (bell) for 400 I.M., 1000 Free, 1650 Free.
